A bit about me...Mitch Lits
I have always loved reading adventure and supernatural fiction. I am at my happiest when writing in the genres I most love reading.
As a child I was an avid reader of The Hardy Boys, Jack London wilderness adventures, and D.C. Comics. As a teenager I was transported to exotic realms by J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Heinlein, Ray Bradbury, etc. In adulthood I was consumed by Dean Koontz, Steven King, Anne Rice—well, you get the picture. To gauge the climate of today’s popular teenage literature I read the current successful writers; Stephanie Meyer, Avi, Margaret Haddix, R.L.Stine, to name a few.
When I say I write supernatural fiction that does not imply my writing revolves around some quirky fantastical or sci-fi element. My stories are not of the plot driven variety, they are always character driven. My stories evolve around realistic teenage characters with real teen voices and problems. The stories are then enhanced by some paranormal element. If my readers can’t identify and empathize with the story characters, even the best plot ideas will fall flat. Then what’s the point?
I have written dozens of short stories since taking my first college creative writing class in the 1970’s. I finished my 1st novel, "A Little of Your Time," and had it self published in October, 2004. It is peopled with strong male and female characters readers will care about. My 2nd novel, "Dreams Travelers," was published in November, 2006. I keep busy working on my 3rd novel, "Destiny’s Call" and an anthology, "Legacies."
I have completed first drafts of two adult novels: Me and My Shadow, and Golden Eyebrows. Golden Eyebrows was a NaNoWriMo winner in the November, 2008 National Novel Writing Month competition.
At the center of my personal universe (see the dedication in my 1st novel) is my family; my wife, Abbe, my daughters, Shelby and Brooke, and our dog, Shadow. Shadow is my companion during otherwise long, solitary writing hours. She is also the inspiration for the character of Jet, the wolf companion of the teenage heroine in my upcoming fantasy novel, "Destiny’s Call."
